Fees, documents, and exceptionsPractical details and high-impact boundaries

Fees

VIN / identity inspection: Amount set or confirmed by the listed authority. The controlling sources do not publish one separate statewide physical-inspection fee. Confirm any charge with the designated title agent or licensing official; title and registration fees are separate.

What to bring

Vehicle; Out-of-state title or other first-Alabama-title ownership documents

High-impact exceptions

  • The complete ordinary renewal prerequisites do not include a separate identity inspection.
  • An in-state private sale of an Alabama-titled vehicle is not a first Alabama title, so no VIN-identity inspection applies (Ala. Admin. Code r. 810-5-75-.55).
  • A dealer sale of a currently Alabama-titled vehicle is a title transfer, not a first Alabama title, so no physical VIN inspection is required.
  • Alabama has no routine safety or emissions test that creates a VIN reinspection after failure. A VIN check remains a first-title requirement only.

What this answer does not do

It does not diagnose whether a vehicle will pass. Passenger-car rules are not reused for motorcycle, trailer, RV, or commercial/heavy classes. If facts are missing or official sources conflict, confirm the requirement with the agency.
