Fees

Safety inspection (vehicle or transaction-specific branch): Fixed fee: $25.75. Hawaii's official fee is $25.75 for an automobile or truck. Reinspection of the failed items within 30 days carries no additional inspection fee.

Safety inspection (vehicle or transaction-specific branch): No inspection charge. Hawaii reinspects the listed defective items without an additional inspection fee within 30 days.

VIN / identity inspection: No separate inspection charge. The VIN check is included in the Hawaii safety inspection and has no separate fee.

What to bring

Current motor vehicle insurance identification card or accepted proof-of-insurance card; Signed notice of inspection failure for a reinspection; Signed notice of inspection failure; Vehicle registration record presented for the PMVI

High-impact exceptions

• The vehicle carries a current Hawaii inspection certificate. No new safety inspection is due now, and Hawaii law expressly allows a later registration transfer while that certificate remains current.
• Hawaii operates no vehicle emissions I/M program; the PMVI safety inspection contains no emissions item and DOH Clean Air Branch materials describe no I/M program.
• No new VIN/identity check is due while the current Hawaii inspection certificate satisfies this renewal or transfer. The VIN was checked when that certificate was issued.
• Within the 30-day reinspection window, Hawaii reinspects only the defective items. Because the VIN/registration item passed the first inspection, no new identity check is due at this reinspection.
