High-impact exceptions

• New Mexico has no certified safety-inspection-station program; the state MVD separately identifies Bernalillo emissions and narrow title/VIN inspections.
• Battery-electric vehicles are exempt from the Bernalillo County emissions program.
• Diesel-powered vehicles are not subject to the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Care emissions test.
• A vehicle less than four model years old is exempt while it remains registered to its original owner; a change of ownership ends this exemption.
• Air Care does not apply when the vehicle is either owned and operated by the armed forces and uniquely military in nature, or used only for off-road construction or farming.
• New Mexico emissions testing applies only to vehicles registered in Bernalillo County; other counties have no emissions program.
• Vehicles weighing 10,001 lb or more are exempt from the Bernalillo emissions program.
• Vehicles 35 years old or older are exempt from the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Care emissions test.
